some friends recommended stopping here
we had never heard of it before
so i looked it up on tripadvisor
Trier is the oldest city in Germany
it has:
ancient Roman ruins
(including Porta Nigra - an 1800 year old roman gate)
it is the birthplace of Karl Marx
one of Emperor Constantine's throne rooms
(it's HUGE...but you're not allowed to take pictures)
turns out this riverside town is a hidden treasure!

in front of the massive cathedral and neighboring church
we could have spent all day in Trier
if you are ever in Germany this is worth a visit
